Sun Lakes Republican Club Minutes
When : Wednesday May 14, 2015 6:30-8:30
Where: Sun Lakes Country Club Navajo Room
Who: approximately 70 people
AGENDA:
- SLRC Chairman Michael Tennant called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. He also reminded us that we will be having a Christmas Dinner Dance again in December, so we can save the date of Wednesday, December 10.
- Pete Gorman led the group in the Invocation.
- Carolyn McCorkle introduced the guest speakers.
- The first speaker was Arizona Field Coordinator, Dawn Schween who spoke on behalf of “American Majority”, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that is training and equipping the next generation of libertyminded candidates, activists, and community leaders. They believe that national change begins at the state and local level. She also explained that the main focus of the organization is to “chase ballots” of any individuals who are registered to vote but haven’t turned in their ballots yet. Thousands of phone calls were made in 2024 to get the voters back on track and to get their ballots in the mail or turned in to the voting centers. Training is made possible and will be available for the upcoming 2026 mid-term elections. https://www.americanmajority.org/about/ Her biggest point was that in 2022, if 350,000 AZ Republicans who received early ballots had voted instead of not returning their ballots, Katie Hobbs would not be our Governor today. This is why ballot chasing is so important! Lessons learned from 2022, helped TPUSA and American Majority to successfully chase ballots in 2024 to elect President Donald Trump. Lessons learned from 2022, helped TPUSA and American Majority to successfully chase ballots in 2024 to elect President Donald Trump.
- The next speaker was Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee. Treasurer Yee is the Administrator of the AZ 529 Education Savings Plan. She shared a power point presentation showing the progress she has made with the AZ Treasury Department. Since the Fall of 2020, Yee has grown assets to over $2.5 billion with
53,138 new accounts opened to help families save for higher education and workforce development. Treasurer Yee also led the effort to pass a state law
requiring students to have financial education in high school. In 2010, Kimberly was elected to the Arizona Legislature and served for eight years, both in the House and the Senate and served as Senate Majority Leader. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from ASU. Kimberly Yee is Arizona’s
chief banking and investment officer and oversees the cash management of Arizona’s $64.7 billion state budget and payments to agencies, local governments,
and schools. Upon taking office in January 2019, assets under management were at $15.4 billion. Today, assets under management have more than doubled to $31.4 billion. She had a question and answer period after her talk. One of the questions asked was about the “missing money” that Governor Katie Hobbs was responsible for. She said that the money is not technically “missing”. The legislature had voted not to use the money in the way Governor Hobbs had spent it. Evidently she did this knowing she was acting against the vote of the legislature. The legislature has chosen to cover the costs from this by allocating money from other sources but these will eventually need to be repaid and brought into account. Senator Mesnard indicated that the legislature is looking at ways to restrain future governors from doing this through legislation. Treasurer Yee’s position as AZ Treasurer is “termed out” and in 2026 there will need to be a new Treasurer elected to fill her position. She shared that she is looking at “other options” to stay involved and serving the State of Arizona. https://www.aztreasury.gov/ treasurer-kimberly-yee - The next speaker was Travis Grantham who currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and is serving as an Aircraft Commander, Evaluator and
Instructor Pilot in the Arizona Air National Guard with over 3,000 hours in the KC135. He currently serves as the 101st Air Refueling Wing Deputy Operations Group Commander. Travis has deployed to numerous forward operating locations throughout the world in support of the war on terror. He recently completed his fourth term in the Arizona House of Representatives where he represented Gilbert in the 14th Legislative District. He served as Speaker Pro Tempore, Chairman of the House Rules Committee and was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee during his final term. Grantham was term limited out in 2024. Representative Grantham is going to run for Congressman Andy Bigg’s seat in the US Senate. https://granthamforcongress.com/ - The final speaker of the evening was Kurt Rohrs, who is on the Chandler School Board. He spoke to us about the bond issues that will likely be on the
upcoming ballots. There will also be positions open on the school board and he is looking to find qualified people to fill those positions. Presently there are 2 conservatives and 3 liberals on the board so it is difficult to have a big impact. He requested that we conservatives come to some of the school board
meetings to support him and show a sign of solidarity. - The winner of the 50/50 Raffle won $35 this evening.
- The SLRC will not meet during the summer months of June, July and August due to vacation schedules. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 10th.
